The 98th Academy Award nominations were announced Thursday morning in a live presentation from the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater, and Ryan Coogler's musical horror epic Sinners has made Oscars history by shattering the previous nomination record. With a stunning 16 nominations, the film surpassed the longstanding mark of 14 held jointly by "All About Eve" (1950), "Titanic" (1997), and "La La Land" (2016).
Sinners' unprecedented haul includes nominations across all major categories: Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay for Ryan Coogler, Best Actor for Michael B. Jordan (in his dual role as twins Smoke and Stack), Best Supporting Actress for Wunmi Mosaku, and Best Supporting Actor for Delroy Lindo. The film's technical achievements were equally recognized with nominations for Cinematography, Production Design, Costume Design, Sound, Editing, Makeup & Hair, Casting, Visual Effects, Original Score, and Original Song ("I Lied to You").
Paul Thomas Anderson's comedic political thriller One Battle After Another followed as the second-most nominated film with 13 nods, marking a stellar one-two punch for Warner Bros., which scored 30 total nominations. The film earned recognition for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and acting nominations for Leonardo DiCaprio (Best Actor), Teyana Taylor (Best Supporting Actress), as well as both Benicio Del Toro and Sean Penn in Best Supporting Actor.
The Best Picture race features ten nominees, including the top two contenders alongside Frankenstein (Netflix), Marty Supreme (A24), Sentimental Value (Neon), Bugonia (Focus Features), F1 (Apple), Hamnet (Focus Features), The Secret Agent (Neon), and Train Dreams (Netflix). Frankenstein, Marty Supreme, and Sentimental Value each garnered nine nominations, while Hamnet received eight.
Among the morning's biggest surprises was the complete shutout of "Wicked: For Good," just one year after the franchise's first film earned 10 nominations. Other notable snubs included Guillermo del Toro missing Best Director for Frankenstein, Paul Mescal's absence from Best Supporting Actor for Hamnet, and Chase Infiniti's omission from Best Actress for One Battle After Another.
The nominations achieved several historic milestones. Ten Black artists earned nominations for their work on Sinners, tying "Judas and the Black Messiah" (2021) for the most from a single film. Ryan Coogler became only the third Black filmmaker nominated in the same year for producing, directing, and screenwriting, joining Jordan Peele and Spike Lee. His wife and producing partner Zinzi Coogler made history as the first Filipina producer and third Black woman nominated for Best Picture.
International cinema continued its strong showing with a record four non-English language performances nominated: Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, Wagner Moura, Renate Reinsve, and Stellan Skarsgård. Both The Secret Agent and Sentimental Value earned nominations for both Best Picture and Best International Feature, marking the 12th and 13th films to achieve this distinction.
Women reached new representation heights with record numbers in directing, sound—including "Sirāt" fielding the first all-women sound team—and overall participation, with 74 women nominated across all categories. Autumn Durald Arkapaw became the first woman of color nominated for Cinematography for her work on Sinners.
The ceremony also introduces a new category for the first time since 2002: Best Casting, recognizing the crucial work of casting directors with nominees including Hamnet, Marty Supreme, One Battle After Another, The Secret Agent, and Sinners.
The 98th Academy Awards will take place Sunday, March 15, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, hosted by Conan O'Brien for the second consecutive year. The ceremony will air live on ABC and stream on Hulu beginning at 7 p.m. ET / 4 p.m. PT.
